the Beginning
Green Watts was born from a friendship and a shared belief that light can change lives. It all began when Ingemar Olausson, a Swede with deep ties to Mozambique, returned to visit the country years after working there. Mozambique had stayed in his heart: the people, the land, the energy of everyday life. After landing in Maputo, he revisited Messica, where he used to work, then made his way to the coast to feel the sand, taste the seafood, and enjoy a cold Laurentina beer under the sun. The country still felt like home.
One morning, with no real plan, Ingemar took a boat to Inhaca Island, a place of calm waters, wooden boats, and slow conversations. There he met a young man named Sidonio Noge, a hotel driver and guide at the time. Sidonio offered more than transport, he offered company, kindness, and curious conversations about life and dreams. On the rocks by the ocean, sharing Maria cookies, they talked about school, the future, and what was possible.
Ingemar asked: “Would you want to study, if you had the chance?”
Sidonio said “Yes ofcourse”, but on the island, schooling ended after 12th grade. There were no courses and no clear path forward.
Ingemar didn’t make any promises but flew home to Sweden and spoke with his wife, Åsa. A few weeks later, a simple message lit up Sidonio’s phone:
“Hi Sidonio, I am Ingemar from Sweden. We met at the hotel. Are you still interested in studying in Maputo?”
The answer came instantly: Yes!
Sidonio packed his courage and moved to Maputo at 23, without any experience of city life. He sold fish from Inhaca at the port to pay rent and studied hard. He enrolled in Transport and Communication studies at ITC (Instituto de Transporte e Comunicação), where he finished with pride!
But life after graduation wasn’t easy. That’s when Ingemar proposed a new idea:
What if we bring solar lamps to rural families? What if we give children a way to study after sunset?
They began with one product, the Sun King Pro, and they saw the potential right away. It wasn’t just about selling something. It was about offering light, dignity, and possibility.
So they built a company from scratch — and Green Watts Maputo, Lda was born. With passion, trust, and a mission:
Light in all homes, especially for children with homework, parents preparing meals, and communities gathering after dark.
Since then, over 600 solar lamps and 200 solar home systems have been delivered across Mozambique. From cities to villages, banana farms to fishing communities. Behind every delivery is a conversation, a handshake, and a shared belief that change is possible.
For Sidonio and Ingemar, it started with a walk on the beach and some cookies.
For thousands of lives, it starts with a light.

Green Watts Maputo Lda is legally registered under Mozambican law and backed by both Mozambican and international capital. The company’s mission is to assemble and install dependable solar energy systems that serve households, public institutions, and private businesses across the country.
Through partnerships and local engagement, we promote the use of solar technology to support everyday needs, whether for lighting homes, charging mobile phones, or improving safety and comfort after dark.
